iPhone 3G Unlock Now Official
At long last, the Dev-Team has just rolled out its much anticipated iPhone 3G unlock known as "yellowsn0w". It isn't exactly a polished product yet though, but there are already reports of successful unlocks appearing all over the Internet despite it being a 0.9 beta release at press time. For folks running the iPhone's latest v2.2 firmware, fret not - it works with that version as well, and will in fact require your precious iPhone 3G to be updated to v2.2 in the first place before it can be run. This is a minor detail to take care of especially when the Dev-Team did urge people not to upgrade to v2.2 in the first place. Ah well, it is the new year, so all ill feelings ought to be water ...

Apple shrinks market gap with RIM, leads satisfaction
Apple has closed the gap with RIM in the smartphone market and leads in initial consumer satisfaction, according to a recent ChangeWave survey. The iPhone has steadily increased its market share, growing from just 11 percent in June to 23 percent in the December survey. Momentum continued well after the 3G launch, with a gain of six points from September to December. BlackBerry devices have held a fairly level dominance, with a slight drop of one point to 41 percent in the same period. View Full Article: Electronista

Microsoft Live Search targets iPhone
Microsoft's Live Search team hasn't been ignoring the iPhone, despite Google's position as the default search provider for Apple's mobile device. In the MacRumors forums last week, the Live Search team was touting a new mobile version for the iPhone. But there's a catch: Rather than releasing an iPhone app, the Redmond company's search group has tuned its mobile site for the iPhone's Safari browser. The approach means that, even on the Live Search page on the iPhone, the first thing most users see is the Google search field in the browser frame. View Full Article: Todd Bishop's Microsoft Blog

iPhone Nano Case - Part II
We told you about the iPhone nano rumor, largely caused by the apparition of a XSKN case for that phone on a Chinese website. Well, know the case is apparently up for sale, even though the phone is definitely not. People are split when it comes to an iPhone nano: some just don't believe in it, while others think that it is possible that Apple has been working on a smaller, lighter and cheaper version of the iPhone. Many point out that a different screen resolution (especially lower) might break the compatibility of existing apps. Others point out that it is very possible that the iPhone nano would have the same number of pixels but on a smaller surface, and yes, that is technically possible. To their credit, XSKN has a ...

SnaptureFlash For The iPhone
Are you one of the millions who think that the iPhone's photo taking capability is extremely gimped? Well, fret not - there's a new solution to help you capture images even in the darkest of environments - the SnaptureFlash. This iPhone accessory shares roughly the same dimensions as most iPhone cases, although you get another 3/8" of hardware protruding from the bottom of the handset. All the additional space are utilized fully, since it carries passive speaker amplification and packs a xenon flash that offers 50,000 lux of brightness - way ahead of the 500 lux found on the average LED flash. The inclusion of an extra LED bulb aids video recording in low light conditions as well. If you like Ubergizmo... Become a fan in Facebook

New Invention Prolongs Battery Life
We're pretty sure that many of you have experienced your iPhone or BlackBerry run out of juice during the most crucial moment - perhaps that won't occur so often in the future especially with Atif Shamim's invention. This Carleton engineering student actually built a prototype that prolongs the battery life of portable devices simply by removing all wires used to hook up the electronic circuits to the antenna. The new module is tipped to consume about a dozen times less juice compared to the traditional, wired-transmitter module, and its simple design will also go some way in lowering the overall cost of any handheld device. Would be interesting to see when this technology will hit the mainstream products. If you like Ubergizmo... Become a fan in Facebook

Metal Gear Solid for iPod is Coming
Lured by the 70% revenue share that developers get from the iPhone App Store, Konami has decided to port several games: Metal Gear solid, Silent hill, Dance Dance Revolution (DDR) and Frogger. There is little doubt that they will end up selling well and generate a mountain of cash for Konami, so we are sure that more developers are going to follow Konami's lead. You need to know that the developer usually gets a small share of the sales revenues in traditional channels. It is something like 20% developer, 30% publisher and 50% distribution. With the App Store, companies have a chance to make more money - but it works better for those who are developer and publisher at the same time. The publisher is usually the entity that funds the development. If you like ...

Microsoft’s first iPhone app: Live Labs releases Seadragon Mobile viewer
Given the popularity of the iPhone, this was bound to happen sometime, and here it is: Microsoft Live Labs today becomes the first group inside the Redmond company to release an application for Apple's mobile phone. Seadragon Mobile, published to the App Store this afternoon, is a free demonstration program meant to test the viability of the high-tech Seadragon photo-display technology on mobile platforms. Lenovo Ophone Oozes With Beauty
What's the most beautiful phone in the world at the moment? After ruling out high end handsets from Amosu and Vertu, we're probably left with the iPhone or something similar. Well, sorry to burst your bubble, but the iPhone has some pretty strong competition in the form of the Lenovo Ophone. This Android-powered touch-sensitive handset was specially designed to comply with China Mobile's Open Mobile System, bringing together Android's core with support and applications for the carrier's homegrown TD-SCDMA 3G network. In layman's terms, you won't find the Lenovo Ophone in use outside of China, so better hope those folks at HTC will take a leaf out of Lenovo's book and come up with something similar in the future. AT&T Offers iPhone 3G Home Activation
Finally, AT&T will be offering home activation for real. All you need to do is purchase the phone online, receive it at the intended address (the home's a much better place compared to the office, trust us), and activate the handset via iTunes right in front of your home PC. This isn't a blanket condition though, since only new accounts and new line activations need apply. Those who want to upgrade from where they are at the moment will still have to make that ardous trip down to a store. Guess it won't really matter too much since anyone who has their heart set on the iPhone 3G will still get it no matter what, but this does make things a whole lot more convenient for everyone. If you like Ubergizmo... ...
