How To Remove Bloatware From Your Notebook
If you were given the gift of a new laptop this Christmas, you know there’s really no better way to start the New Year. Whether it was upgrading an older notebook, or even your first computer chances are you’re expecting a huge bump in performance. If major notebook manufactures are known for anything these days, it’s filling up your shiny new machine with tons of additional software. This “bloatware” increases startup and shutdown times, increases background disk activity which promotes system lag, and greatly reduces battery life if the system can never reach an idle state. In this guide we’ll go over steps you can take to remove most of the unneeded applications that came preinstalled on your new notebook and hopefully speed it up without going as far as ...

IE’s European share falls under 60%, Firefox’s growth stalls
Fewer than 60% of European Web users run Microsoft Corp.'s Internet Explorer, while more than 31% have switched to Mozilla's Firefox, a French-based metrics company reported yesterday. Microsoft's browser dipped under 60% for the first time in August, rallied slightly in September, but then dipped below that bar again during October and November, said XiTi Monitor, a Web measurement site operated by Applied Technologies Internet of Merignac, France. Mac beats all comers on reliability, support
For the second year running, Apple Inc.'s computers are the most reliable and its support the most dependable of all computer makers selling in the U.S., a national chain of computer service shops said today. Apple's Macs beat machines sold and supported by Panasonic Corp., Lenovo Group Ltd., Toshiba Inc. and Hewlett-Packard Co., according to Rescuecom Corp.'s third annual reliability report. Apple, which took the top spot last year, more than doubled its score from 2007 and again trounced the competition, this year posting a score 43% higher than next-best Panasonic. A recent holiday consumer study revealed that consumers may be changing their spending this season: Two out of three Americans admit they will consider spending less on family and friends this year than they did last year. Nearly half will give one large family gift as opposed to many smaller individual items. Nearly three-fourths of Americans will give gifts that provide their family and friends with entertainment while staying home. Money-saving options are available for families that are demanding more from their personal technology, such as creating greeting cards or family photo albums at home, or tracking and organizing finances using the latest software. Holiday shoppers who are looking for quality at a low price will find that Microsoft Office Home and Student (http://www.office.microsoft.com) offers the latest essential software for $149.95 (estimated retail price). ...

Sprint U300 USB Modem Goes Hybrid
Sprint's U300 USB modem is first off the blocks in the US that offer both 3G and 4G Internet device in a single solution, as it is able to access the recently launched Sprint WiMAX network while retaining full functionality with the older, original-spec EVDO network. While you are able to connect between 2Mbps and 4Mbps in the current 4G coverage area, real-life performance sees figures in the region of 600Kbps to 1.4Mbps. The U300 reportedly supports GPS mapping data on 3G portions of the network as well, featuring bundled software that auto-detects the fastest available connection. Too bad the Sprint U300 USB modem is compatible with Windows 2000 and later computers only, leaving Mac and Linux fans out in the cold. Shipping begins on December 21st, and it will ...

SSDs run best on Windows 2000, Patriot claims
If Microsoft really wants to tweak solid-state drive performance in Windows 7, then perhaps it only needs to look back. As ComputerWorld reports, Patriot Memory claims that the venerable Windows 2000 outperforms its modern successors when running on SSDs. Patriot reportedly found Windows 2000 to be "5% to 8% faster" than OSes like Windows XP, Windows Vista, Mac OS X, and Linux, although the report doesn't say exactly what tests those numbers apply to. Patriot Engineering Manager Saeed Arash Far commented that Vista actually outperformed XP in the same benchmarks, but Windows 2000 trumped them both. View Full Article: The Tech Report

ExtremeUSB Extends To 25 Miles
Just how long is your USB cable? The USB standard says that it should be no longer than five feet long, but the ExtremeUSB setup from Icron is able to reach a phenomenal 25 miles in length. Now that's pretty lengthy by any means, imagine working from home using this setup while remaining connected to the computer at your office! The whole idea of this would be for governments to run secure connections to distant cameras, and the setup doesn't really use USB. Instead, you will need to purchase plenty of boxes that will convert the USB signal to or from a proprietary signal, sending it over the wire/air/powerline. There is no word on pricing, but it ought to arrive at OEMs' doorsteps sometime early next year. If you like Ubergizmo... ...

Yurex Keeps Track Of Restless Legs
While you're reading this post, take a look at your leg (as well as those of your colleagues) - are any of them shaking? If the answer is 'yes' to at least one person, then you had best place an order for the Yurex contraption. This made in Japan device helps users visualize, monitor and control how their restless legs shake. It might be a tad uncomfortable at first though since you'll need to strap it to your thigh, where two silver disco ball-shaped sensors will go about measuring your leg's horizontal and vertical vibrations, displaying the accumulated leg-shake tally on a 10-digit LCD counter. When connected to a computer's USB port, the specially programmed software will download data from the Yurex and analyze the wearer's leg-shaking habits and rhythm ...
