Microsoft PDC attendees get ‘the goods’
Mary Jo Foley: Microsoft provided attendees of its Professional Developer Conference this week with a 160 GB drive full of bits and resources. The Windows 7 M3 pre-beta build and Windows Server 2008 R2 M3 pre-beta are on the drives. (The Windows 7 build attendees got is the September build 6801 that leaked out a month ago. The new taskbar and quite a bit of the other eye candy Microsoft showed off during the October 28 PDC keynote aren’t part of the pre-beta build.) What else is on those PDC drives? The UXEvangelist blog provides the full list of the PDC goods. A few of the goodies... View Full Article: Mary Jo Foley's Blog

Athlon, Core 2 architectural efficiencies compared
If you go shopping for sub-$100 processors right now, you'll be faced with two main contenders: Core 2-based Intel chips and AMD Athlon X2s. The Athlons typically have higher clock speeds for the price, but their Intel rivals often perform better. Why? A good two years after the debut of the Core 2 Duo, Real World Technologies has put together an in-depth comparison of the Athlon and Core 2 designs. Rather than delve into the obscure architectural details of the two offerings, RWT used apps called VTune and CodeAnalyst to poke around under the hood and get hard numbers for things like instructions per clock, branch predictor accuracy, and how the chips handle their L1 and L2 caches. Microsoft took the wraps off the next version of Windows Tuesday at its Professional Developers Conference, and the Web's abuzz with first impressions and previews--most of which are positive. It looks like Microsoft is making the right moves to counter some of the problems with Vista: application and hardware compatibility are top priorities, and most of the UI tweaks I've seen so far seem helpful rather than arbitrary, as many of the changes in Vista seemed to be. But the release of Windows 7 is still a year away, and there will no doubt be modifications between now and then. But forget the big picture...what's in store for digital audio in the next version of Windows? Here's a quick rundown of what in known based on the very early pre-beta shown ...

Microsoft Study Reveals Small Business IT Sophistication
Microsoft Corp. today launched the results of a global study looking at how small businesses use and manage their IT, as well as their attitudes toward hosted IT services.
